A joint project between Japan and Malaysia, “Art like, Care like 《Totsu-totsu Dance》,” was launched in FY2022.

The Totsu-totsu Dance project, led by dancer/choreographer JAREO Osamu, has been conducted at the facility for the elderly in Kyoto, Japan, and the facility staff members as well as the local community have reported positive outcomes. Totsu-totsu Dance is based on the fundamentals of communication including eye contact, sounds, shared attention and imitation. It is based on a profile of a person’s communication abilities and uses it to help the person with dementia remain connected to the ‘social world’.

This program was first introduced to Malaysia in 2020 as an online talk session and followed by a series of online workshops conducted for people living with dementia and their care-partners in Malaysia from August 2022. The team from Japan visited Malaysia in late December last year to conduct various workshops physically in Penang and Ipoh.

One of the main issues in dealing with dementia is communication which is a vital part of human existence. We rely on spoken word to develop and maintain connections with others. People living with dementia will sometimes experience breakdown of their verbal communication skills and this can lead to social isolation. In Japan, Totsu-totsu Dance is one of the strategies used to connect with people living with dementia when words no longer can be used.

The team from Japan will be in Malaysia again to conduct a follow up physical workshops for the people with dementia, care-partners as well as the members of public. There will also be a separate session for dancers and performers.

2022年度にスタートした、日本とマレーシアの共同プロジェクト「アートのような、ケアのような《とつとつダンス》」。

《とつとつダンス》は、舞踊家・振付家の砂連尾理を中心に京都の高齢者施設「グレイスヴィルまいづる」で実施され、施設職員や近隣の方々から好評を得てきました。《とつとつダンス》は、アイコンタクト、音、注意の共有、模倣など、コミュニケーションの基本をベースとしています。その人のコミュニケーション能力にあわせて、認知症の人が社会とのつながりを維持できるように《とつとつダンス》を行なっています。

《とつとつダンス》は、オンラインで100人以上マレーシアの参加者が集まった8月のイントロダクション・トークセッションを皮切りに、その後、マレーシアの認知症患者とそのケアパートナー向けに5回のオンライン・ワークショップが開催されました。日本からのチームは昨年12月下旬にマレーシアを訪れ、ペナンとイポーで様々なワークショップを実施しました。

認知症に向き合うときに大きな問題となることのひとつは、コミュニケーションに関することです。私たちは他者とのつながりを築き、維持するために話し言葉に頼っています。認知症になると、言葉によるコミュニケーション能力が低下し、社会的孤立を招いてしまいます。《とつとつダンス》は、言葉が自由に使えなくなった認知症の人たちとつながるための手段のひとつになり得ると考えています。

日本チームが今年8月に再びマレーシアを訪れ、認知症の人たち、ケアパートナー、そして一般の人たちのために、身体的なフォローアップ・ワークショップを行います。今年度は、ダンサーやパフォーマー向けのセッションも別途予定しています。
